The Power of Authenticity in an Imperfect World
Sanguine Element #5 is Authenticity. This is one my core values, and as it’s so essential to living a sanguine life I dedicated an entire chapter to it in my latest book, Lost and Found in the Land of Mañana. [Haven’t read the book yet? Buy my book about living in Costa Rica here.]
Authenticity is truly one of my core values and essential to living a sanguine life.
Here’s an excerpt from that chapter:
I find great freedom in the truth.
I need to show up in the world in an authentic way, even when others don’t seem to value my authenticity. Or would prefer I act in a different way. Make different choices.
The only person whose responsibility it is to be true to me is me. If I don’t stand my ground and hold up, stand up, speak up for what I believe is right, I simply communicate to others that it’s ok to treat me as they wish.
With my every effort to be authentic, I help to create a world in which I want to play and work, live and thrive.
Whenever possible, I model the personal and professional relationships that I would like to engage in. I’m not going to say this has been easy or that I’ve actually succeeded 100% of the time. I have definitely had moments when I’ve been dragged down into the muddy quicksand and given back what I’ve been given, rather than what I would like to receive.
Welcome to being human.
I do try to show up in a way that is aligned with my values. It’s actually not always appreciated. I’ve been told that when I live my values, I come off as acting superior. Unfortunately, that’s a fairly human dynamic. Just ask any straight A student, or kid accused of being a goodie-two-shoes. People infinitely prefer when we conform to their standards, rather than maintain our own.
The good news is that other people don’t get to define my existence.
Trusting myself enough to get past the naysayers can be hard work. It requires really knowing myself and being willing to let people dislike me, which can be hard in a people pleasing culture. And people pleasing cultures exist all around the world, not just here in Costa Rica.
But I want to feel empowered. To believe in myself. To know who I am and be willing to do the work necessary to live a totally fulfilling, wildhearted life.
I see this as all the more reason why I am here, doing what I do and trying to be the best role model I can be. To set the standard for education, experience and empowerment a little higher, but to also understand that we’re all human.
There is a beautiful simplicity in that goal. Because when I show up in an authentic way, then all my thoughts, words and actions are in alignment and working for the greater good. What I intend to do and what I actually do are 100% in sync and supporting one another. There is nothing to be afraid of; no repercussions.
And isn’t that a beautiful way to show up in the world?
My choices of authenticity allow me to live freely, without fear.
Becoming more aware of authenticity and how it shows up in my life is a mindful task. Being honest with myself and others can be uncomfortable. But when truth shows up, beauty is created. Not just in my own life but in the lives of all.
I get to build relationships, rather than tear them down. I get to manifest positive reactions rather than negative. I get to feel whole, rather than divided.
Authenticity provides us with the opportunity to build up from the depths and relight the spark in each other. When I witness how I’m showing up in the world, my goal is for it to always be with a genuine spirit that is true to my inherent nature.
If you struggle with showing up as your authentic self, my DIY online program, Inherent Harmony [check it out here] can help.
It’s based on both my education in behavioral sciences as well as the experiences I’ve learned, living in what some people would consider a crazy, backwards and upside down country.
Throughout the program you will learn and focus on the core elements of how to be more happy, healthy and harmonious, and it will teach you how to show up, be empowered to thrive and live a wildhearted, sanguine life in our imperfect world.
